A podiatrist, also called a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, is a specialist who provides medical diagnosis and treatment of foot and ankle problems. these include but are not limited to sprains and fractures, bunions, heel pain/heel spurs, hammertoes, neuromas, ingrown nails, warts, corns and calluses.

Podiatrist attain a four year undergraduate degree before attending an accredited four year course at medical school where they attain the degree of Doctor of Podiatric Medicine(DPM). DPMs also have to complete a residency at an accredited hospital by the American Podiatric Medical Association.

Podiatrists are consultants to patients and doctors for the prevention of foot problems. They diagnose and treat tumors, ulcers, fractures, skin and nail disease. They prescribe therapies and perform diagnostic studies such as x-rays, ultrasounds and vascular tests. They provide and fit foot inserts that will correct walking patterns and mechanics of the foot.
